Maria João Macedo is a graphic designer, working independently since 2008. Based in Porto, she works mainly for the cultural field, specializing in book design and visual identities, and covering a wide range of formats in the print and digital media. Her approach tends to prioritizing content over a personal stylistic signature, where conversation and exchange play a crucial role in the final result. Typography is also a major tool in the development of each project.
In addition to her graphic design practice, she is part of the collective than runs Sismógrafo, an art space in Porto, devoted to visual arts, cinema, improvised music, literature and thought. The activity of this group of people can be defined by their critical engagement towards contemporary culture.
After a degree in Communication Design and a Master in Editorial Design at Porto’s Faculty of Fine Arts, her studio practice was initiated with Isabel Duarte, currently working in London. On her own since 2012, she teams up on occasions with other graphic designers, writers, artists, editors and programmers.
